Metering pump is a pump that can consistently pump a fixed amount of liquid accurately.
There are two main types of pumps: turbo pumps and positive displacement pumps.
Metering pump falls in the category of positive displacement pumps.
Metering pump is indispensable when an accurate quantity of
liquid delivery is required.

Working Principle of Metering Pump

When the piston is pushed forward, the liquid is discharged from the cylinder.

Metering pump works on the basic principle of an injection syringe.
When the piston is pulled back, the liquid is pulled into the cylinder.
When the piston is pushed forward, the liquid is discharged from the cylinder.

Accurate quantity of liquid can be pumped.

Since the volume of the pistion movement is equal to amount of liquid
delivered, accurate quantity of liquid can be pumped.

How is the liquid transferred?
Liquid cannot be pumped efficiently with only one entry and exit of the cylinder.
Therefore, the single connection to the cylinder is branched into two.

To control the flow direction and clearly separate inlet and outlet from the single branched connection, one check valve is used in each branch.
A check valve allows liquid in one direction only, making it simple to designate one branch of the bifurcated pump connection as inlet and the other as outlet as shown in the schematic below.
